Heritage in Focus
Artists from the Skipton and Craven area are invited to submit proposals for new work on aspects of the heritage of Skipton and Craven. This is a collaborative exhibition between Craven Arts and Skipton Civic Society.

The Brief
Craven Arts House and Skipton Civic Society are looking for new, original artwork which responds to the heritage of Skipton’s architecture – the design and appearance, history and characters associated with one of the town’s many historical buildings or structures. Applications are encouraged from painters, printers, textile artists, ceramicists, sculptors and jewellers and more! An artist may choose to depict a whole building or take inspiration from just one detail of its façade or history. The theme is open to interpretation.
The building that inspires your work must be within the research area of Skipton Civic Society. Buildings may be publicly or privately owned. Structures might include bridges, statues and walls. A list of Skipton’s heritage buildings can be found here:

Artists are welcome to propose work in any medium, and wall mounted work can be any size or shape, but should take up no more than 1.5m meter 2 of wall space.
Artists may submit proposals for up to 5 pieces of work to hang/display. Artists are also invited to produce high quality reproductions related to the exhibition that will be available for sale in the exhibition shop.

Judging Criteria
Proposed artworks will be judged on the following criteria:
1. Relevance to Skipton’s history and architecture
2. The quality of your supporting artwork (as seen on your website or social media).

If successful in your application to this exhibition, you will not only develop your reach to potential buyers and reviewers
but help increase engagement with the arts and culture of Skipton and Craven and attract visitors to the area.
Before the public opening of the exhibition on October 9th There will be private viewings for local press, the owners and tenants of Skipton’s heritage buildings and structures, local business owners, the Mayora, local dignitaries, arts educators, and
a welcome evening for artists and their supporters.
During the six weeks of the exhibition, there will be a series of talks and heritage walks by Skipton Civic Society, weekend workshops for families, a Pecha Kucha style evening, artist’s demonstrations and classes. We will keep you up to date with details.
Artists are encouraged to attend as many of the events as possible, and also to volunteer to welcome visitors at the exhibition desk, according to availability.
The exhibition will be promoted locally and online by the Craven Arts marketing team.
Fees:
Craven Arts House is a charitable foundation which relies on income from exhibitions, room hire, and workshops to keep its premises on Otley Street, Skipton open. The exhibition is organised, managed, curated, and hosted by expert member artists and volunteers.
There is a non-refundable application fee of £8 for members and £16 for non members. Works will only be considered upon receipt of the application fee.
Work can be offered for sale during the exhibition, and there is a commission charge of 20%

How to Submit
If your proposal is accepted, you will then have over 5 months to produce the work.

Wall Mounted work
Submissions are digital. Artists are invited to submit proposals for up to 5 pieces of work each. Work can be any size or shape but should take up no more than 1.5m square of wall space. Please give us the completed size of your work including any proposed frames or mounts.
Sculpture and 3-D
3-D and sculptural work that does not hang on the wall should be no higher than 1.5 m. All work should arrive ready to display. Please be clear about how your work stands or is displayed.
All work should be ready to hang/display when delivered to the exhibition and can be framed or unframed, with suitable hanging or display attachments in place. All work must be complete at the time of submission. We reserve the right to reject work which varies substantially from the proposal.
